5 Questions With: Bas Rutten.
Jul. 18, 2010
This weeks “5 Questions With” we ask MMA legend Bas “El Guapo” Rutten 5 MMA related questions.
Q. When did you get started into mixed martial arts & why?
A. I saw Bruce lee’s “Enter the Dragon”, from that moment on I wanted to be a fighter. Then later, when MMA came out they asked me if I wanted to do “free fighting”, that’s what they called it then, in Japan. They told me that I could punch kick, and everything else and I would get paid, that sounded to good to be true, haha, so I did it.
Q. What was your worst injury?
A. My worst injury, the most painful one is, tendonites in both upper arms, REALLY painful, once it starts, and it is like three weeks before the fight, I will have it EVERY workout, so two times a day, I can train about 45 minutes and will be in intense pain for like an hour and a half, I would lose weight because of the pain.
Q. What was you most memorable fight and why?
A. Re-match against Funaki, he beat me the first time, they thought he would do it again, they were wrong, I really beat him up, was a great fight for the both of us, Funaki showed great heart, I knocked him down 4 times and he kept coming back, until a full knee to the head stopped him.
Q. If you could fight anyone in the cage who would it be with and why?
A. Fedor, I would need to be in shape like I was when I competed though, haha, because he’;s the best in the world, just want to see what I can do against him.
Q. What has been the hightlight of your career?
A. All my title fights of course, and finishing my career with 22 wins is for me also very important. Also the way I won my fights, only three went to a decision, 12 KO’s, and all different KO’s and 13 submissions, all different subs, you name it, I did it. I love this because that’s what a great Mix Martial Artist should be able of doing. Whatever mistake your opponent makes, you capitalize on.
